If you are looking for a quality pair of boots to wear in the winter, walking on snow without sliding on the ice (like most other shoes do), then count on the Men’s Colorado Boot from Cat Footwear. You will have no trouble wearing these boots in the summer as you still have ‘cool’ feet, where most boots usually get too hot. Just as a point of comparison, Caterpillar’s improved insulation (thin insulation) gives you more robust quality compared to Timberlands. The boots are immediately wearable with high quality leather uppers and rubber soles made for comfort.

Coming to the brand, Caterpillar needs no real introduction as we had already reviewed one of its popular trainer shoes viz the Men’s Faze Trainer Shoe. With almost two decades of experience in marketing shoes and boots under the name ‘Caterpillar’, their line has evolved into a wide range of boot styles and features hundreds of diverse styles and multiple product categories. Interestingly, the Colorado Boots are built by Wolverine World Wide who also manufactures boots for the military, Harley Davison and others.

Design features:

The Cat Footwear Men’s Colorado Boot is a well built and solid boot with a lot of bulk and street cred included – right from the bottom up. We found that the tread is more of a caterpillar excavator that runs deep, big and powerful. The upper structure of the Colorado Boot is pretty well defined having nice, tight stitching. The laces are rather long and we found that the boot requires no tripping up. The first thing you will notice upon trying on these boots is the added masculinity and weight that you may feel when wearing them. Nevertheless, the tightness you may feel around the shin tends to leave reddening and indentation marks if you lace it up too tightly. Overall, it looks a nicely built look that would outlast several years of use with an affordable price tag to boast!

Tumbled full grain leather or Nubuck:

The Caterpillar Colorado Boot has a pretty durable construction and features Nubuck or premium full grain tumbled leather uppers which are simply superb and the leather too is of good quality. The outer leather of the shoe is pretty durable enough to endure quite a lot of punishment, though it is certainly not waterproof and the sole seems like it would last forever. However, the first thing that struck us about these boots is their lightweight nature.

In fact, the leather boot is less heavy to carry around on your feet and this seems to be a good thing. In this case, we suppose the manufacturer has been able to achieve the light weight by reducing the thickness of the rubber sole, thickness of the upper leather and the padding in the collar about the ankles. A word of caution though, the Nubuck marks quite easily, so it is recommended you make use of protective spray. Undoubtedly, these boots are unbelievably comfortable to wear and not to mention that they are softer than other Cat Footwear and they will need less breaking in and this is a good thing.

Goodyear welt construction:

This boot like most Timberland shoe features genuine Goodyear welt construction that accounts for maximum support. This construction makes sure the work boots are really tough and thus enhances your lateral stability. This stability in general is achieved by sewing the boot’s outsole to the upper portion and this allows for the outsole to be replaced. Overall, this form of comfort gives you great comfort, durability, individual fit and resistance for wear.

No steel toecap:

The Colorado Men’s Boot does not have a steel toecap, though the toes are nicely protected somewhat by the pretty rigid cap at the end. And whether it has any kind of cap or not in there is just where you find the bend in the leather giving the impression of a cap. Either way, you probably would not want to drop anything considerable heavy on your toes whilst putting on these boots, just in case.

Poor Colouring:

If customer reviews are any indication, the colouring of the boots is simply not up to the mark. It appears as if either the black paint is too thin in several places with a bit of brown under its showing, although or that they were splashed using brown colour paint in some places. The end result looks like they contain a small amount of dry mud on them all the time. It has also been difficult to find the boot in plain black leather rather than Nubuck.

Durable & Hard wearing Rubber sole:

The Colorado Boot is made of durable and hard wearing rubber sole. At first, the boots would seem like very hard and difficult to wear into, but all you need to do is simply put an insole into them and indeed they have been really comfortable. The sole is rock sturdy and could outlast competition. However, there have been a few users who have complained that less care seems to have been taken when it comes to the stitching around the sole and that only fewer stitches have been made use of and it seems to us at least like the thread that is being used is fraying in parts.

Lace details:

A good feature in Cat Footwear Men’s Colorado Boot is that the laces could be ‘unhinged’ and this means you do not need to put in much of an effort taking them off at the end of the day. Instead of having full rows of lace loops, this boot is built with a mix loops and what we believe Caterpillar terms ‘speedlaces’, a term for what are just hooks which the laces curve around rather than through. The idea behind this construction is that, you do need to unloop the laces all the time you remove these boots as unhooking the laces offers enough play to take them off from your feet unlike full loops. In practise, whilst this system can take some getting used to, we feel it is quite a handy feature to have, though in our experience, the sharp-edged hooks seem to outwear on the shoe laces more than the loops. We found the laces pretty long and obviously multiple knots are needed to make sure there is no tripping up. The boots have additional eyelets for shoelaces at the bottom rather than at the top.

Padded collar:

You will find reasonably good padding around the top of the boot where your ankle sits for superior protection, comfort and greater mobility. In other words, the padding on the collar gives an internal suspension in places that are more likely to scrap and scuff over a period of time.

Cleaning the boots is a breeze:

This pair of boots is pretty easy to clean and all you need is a wipe over using a damp cloth. The boot does seem to take some wearing in the beginning though, but this is because of the full leather upper that is very tough. We rather recommend doubling up your socks or going for a thick pair of socks, particularly for the first few times you put on this boot as the boot does tend to run your heel till they take to the foot’s natural shape.

Conclusion:

The Colorado Boot is an excellent casual/work style and one you have perhaps somewhere on the High street, as the boot sits as well as there like it does on a building site. These boots could be worn in and they are simply fabulous as they look good when you wear them with cargos or jeans, However, these boots will also be more practical a shoe, when you require them to be working in 6 inches of snow. The experiences of those who have tried the footwear have been so far excellent and most of them have admitted that this sturdy pair of boots has kept their feet pretty warm with pretty thin socks even at temperatures as low as -25 (-13F) degree C or -15 (5F) and we have just started to wonder how it would be in summer and spring.
